Gender and sexuality are such sensitive issues even adults can’t truly wrap their heads around them. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be appropriate to talk to toddlers about these. That’s why a mother in Colorado was shocked to discover her 4-year-old daughter is taught about same-sex relationships in school.
A report from a news outlet in Denver said that the mother, identified as R.B. Sinclair, pulled out her child from Montview Community Preschool & Kindergarten. The reason is that child have been taught about same-sex relationships.
For the surprised Sinclair, it’s way too early for her little one to learn about these things, much so think about them.
The preschool was reported to use books that discuss sex education topics. In one chapter, confused worms were depicted to have no idea about their gender identity.
Sinclair raises her daughter with both Western and Muslim values, that’s why these issues are critical to her. She went out to ask the school officials to exclude her child from these lessons. The school replied that the lessons are part of the anti-bias curriculum while the study materials are used for the same purpose.
Kim Bloemen, Director of Early Childhood Education for the Boulder Valley School District, said in an interview, “Biases start as kids get older and start to see differences as negative.”
With regards to the children learning about things too early, Bloemen added, “At a young age, kids are exploring all different kinds of things. It’s about just providing them with all these experiences.”
Sinclair commented, “I think at this age they don’t know what bias is. They could have kids from Mars, and they would still play with each other. It’s not that she isn’t exposed to diversity, because it is the world we live in, but how are they having these conversations?”
Since the school wouldn’t budge, Sinclair had no choice but to pull out her child from the school.
